Employee Initiatives

In addition to our corporate outreach programs, Arbitron devotes a section of its Intranet site—called Community Connections—where employees can showcase their own charitable activities and draw support from their colleagues.

The Environment

In 2006, Arbitron moved from delivering radio ratings in printed books for nearly 300 local markets to electronic delivery of the ratings data. This move not only saved countless trees, but also eliminated shipping and packaging of the books thereby significantly reducing Arbitron's carbon footprint.

Arbitron supports an employee team of dedicated individuals concerned about climate change and protecting our environment. This team has initiated corporate-wide programs, including the installation of water filters on water fountains to reduce the use of bottled water, and employee educational programs to reduce an individual's carbon footprint, including a contest to reduce home utility bills.

Where appropriate, Arbitron provides employees with pre-paid transit cards to encourage use of public transportation. Arbitron includes a section on the company Intranet site where employees can find coworkers who are interested in ridesharing. In addition, many employees have been given the opportunity to work from home.

Recognition and Awards

Arbitron was honored in 2002, 2004 and 2005 by being named to Fortune magazine's "100 Best Companies to Work For". In 2005 and 2006, we earned the Workplace Excellence Seal of Approval from the Maryland Work-Life Alliance, and in 2004, the Distinguished Achievement Award from Morgan State University.

We were also recognized in 1998 with the James W. Rouse Diversity Award, which salutes innovative strategies that advance the concept and the spirit of diversity. The prestigious award, given by the Chesapeake Human Resources Association, is named after the developer who was internationally known for building better ways for people to live and work.

Outreach

In addition to our community programs, Arbitron reaches out to minority broadcasters and advertising agencies in a number of important ways. We have assembled a talented team of radio and agency professionals to serve the specific needs of our multicultural clients.

Arbitron provides annual free studies that focus on the media habits and consumer power of African Americans and Hispanics.

We also provide industry information on the value of radio that can help lead to minority ownership of stations, and we offer sales and programming clinics for urban stations.
